In Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, prisoners sit bound in darkness, watching shadows flicker across a wall. Those shadows—cast by objects behind them, lit by a distant fire—become their entire reality. They name the shadows, debate them, and even celebrate those who interpret them best. But it is all illusion. Truth lies outside the cave, in the light they have never seen.

It is difficult to read that allegory and not recognize its eerie parallel within the current condition of the Church of God Florida Cocoa Office.

Pastors, ministers, and laity—many of them sincere, faithful, and devoted—are staring at shadows.

The shadows are the ceremonies, the conferences, the polished language of appreciation, the plaques and awards, the public affirmations of “excellence.” They gather, they applaud, they give love offerings, and they maintain the rhythm of church life as though all is well. But behind the performance, the fire tells a different story.

The administrative bishop, Anthony T. Pelt, Sr., has admitted to mishandling and misplacing at least $1.4 million over nearly 12 years. That is not a shadow—that is substance. The number of churches has declined. Attendance has diminished. There is no functioning state office headquarters. The campground remains in disrepair, burdened with decades-old debt, code enforcement fines exceeding $111,000, and even a federal tax lien that recently surpassed $51,000.

These are not rumors. These are not distortions on the wall. These are facts.

Yet, like the prisoners in Plato’s cave, many remain fixed in place. The state council—save for three dissenting voices—voted to keep him in office through July 2026. The people continue to attend, to celebrate, to affirm. They hear the echoes of leadership and mistake them for truth. They see the shadows of recognition—such as the Excellence in Leadership Award presented by Tony Stewart—and accept them as reality.

But what happens when a man is praised for excellence while presiding over decline?

Less church. Less attendance. More debt. More fines. Less morale. Less property. Less money.

This is not light. This is shadow-play.

Plato argued that if one prisoner were freed and brought into the sunlight, the initial experience would be painful. His eyes would struggle to adjust. He might even resist the truth, preferring the familiar darkness. And if he returned to the cave to tell others, they might reject him—perhaps even resent him—for disturbing their comfort.

That is where you are now.

To speak plainly about corruption, mismanagement, and institutional failure is to step into the light—and to invite others to do the same. But light is uncomfortable for those who have grown accustomed to darkness.

Still, Scripture reminds us, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).

Freedom requires confrontation with reality.

The Church of God is not the cave. It was never meant to be a theater of shadows. It is meant to be a city set on a hill—visible, accountable, and governed with integrity. But when leadership fails and the people accept illusion over truth, even the brightest institutions can dim.

The question now is simple, but weighty:

Will you remain seated, applauding shadows? Or will you rise, turn around, and walk toward the light?
