Save the Dog, Not Your Brother - A True Story

Yo, what’s good? Let me take you back to November 8, 2008, in the chill coastal vibes of Port Salerno, Florida. It’s a crisp fall morning, and Sheila’s just wrapping up an all-night prayer vigil at her local church. She’s tired, yawning, ready to crash, when she spots something in the church parking lot. It’s this scruffy, limping shih tzu—dirty, weak, looking like it’s been through it. The poor pup’s hobbling into a dewy field, and Sheila’s heart just breaks.
Without a second thought, she grabs an old bath towel from her car and sprints over. She’s all gentle, scooping up this mangy dog like it’s her own kid. She tucks him into her car and heads straight to her parents’ place—the house where she and her brother were raised, full of faith and family vibes. When she rolls up, her mom, dad, and brother Robert are chowing down on a fresh breakfast spread. Her dad’s like, “What’s the dog’s name?” Sheila pauses, realizing she doesn’t even know.

Robert, her brother, jumps in with the energy, “Yo, call him Obama!” Why? Because just four days earlier, Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States, and the vibes were high. So, that’s that—Obama the shih tzu gets a new home, a new mom, and lives his best life for over 15 years. Straight-up fairy-tale ending for the pup.

But hold up, let’s fast-forward to February 2025. The story takes a turn. Sheila’s brother—Robert—is going through it. He’s a domestic violence survivor, battling his second cancer diagnosis, and just got fired from his middle school math teacher gig via a cold email (like Craig in Friday, straight-up). On top of that, he’s a gospel preacher and internet content creator, but life’s hitting him hard. His mom, though? She’s got his back, always telling him, “You can always come home, son.” That’s the deal—mom’s house is the safe spot, the reset button.

Robert gives Sheila a heads-up call, letting her know mom’s cool with him coming back to heal and regroup. Sheila’s not thrilled, but she’s like, “If that’s what mom wants, I’ll respect it.” Sounds good, right? Nah, plot twist. Two days later, Robert’s 25 minutes away, rolling up in a bright yellow Penske truck with some stuff to store at mom’s. Then Sheila hits him with a call. She’s like, “I’m power of attorney, and I’m overriding mom’s decision. You’re not coming here.”

Robert’s shook. He’s like, “Bruh, I’m in cancer treatment!” Sheila? Cold as ice. “I wish you luck,” she says, like she’s brushing him off. He pushes back, desperate, “What about love? What about love for your brother?” But Sheila’s made up her mind—not because she had to, but because she could. And just like that, she shuts the door on her only adopted brother, leaving him out in the cold. The end.

Moral of the Story
The moral, as Robert L. Carpenter, II, lays it out, draws from scripture (Genesis 4:9, 1 John 2:11, 1 John 3:15). It’s about love, empathy, and responsibility for your family. Sheila saved a stray dog with all the compassion in the world but turned her back on her own brother in his darkest hour, echoing Cain’s question, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” The story warns against letting hate or indifference blind you to the needs of those closest to you. Choosing cruelty over love—especially when you have the power to help—cuts deeper than just rejection; it’s a betrayal of the bonds we’re called to uphold.

Dear friends, family, and kind-hearted supporters,

I’m Robert Carpenter, a dedicated middle school math teacher and assistant pastor, reaching out in a time of unimaginable hardship. Life has thrown me into a perfect storm of challenges: I’ve recently begun treatment for cancer, which has brought both emotional and financial strain, and I’m entangled in a distressing legal battle due to domestic violence. My estranged wife has filed for divorce, seized our vehicle, and manipulated our lease agreement by removing my name, putting me at risk of homelessness. These actions have left me vulnerable, but I’m determined to fight back with your help.

If you only knew what I went through to wear this new black suit on this first Sunday in May, you’d praise God for everything you go through! 🙏 After losing nearly 100 lbs in the last year due to cancer and some stress, none of my clothes or suits fit. But God provided this tailor-made suit this week—no alterations needed. I’m grateful. I’m thankful. #Faithful #GodProvides #FirstSunday
